History of Tartan Ware: Antique Tartan Ware was produced in Scotland from the mid 19th century to 1900 by various Scottish groups called clans, principally to celebrate Christmas. People traveling to Scotland were intrigued by the various plaid colors of these wares. Everything from thimbles to large footed tea caddy’s and in between could be bought back as souvenirs to celebrate the holidays. Each piece is marked in gold with the family clan name.
